2010 Girls District Wrap-up

American Flyers Diving continued to dominate the northeast Ohio diving competition at the 2010 District Championship Meet at Cleveland State University this week. AFD had 6 girls competing between Division 1 & Division 2, and advanced 2 of those 6 divers to their respective State Championship Meet.

The competition kicked off Wednesday afternoon with the D1 girls meet. Solon freshman Sivan Mills had plenty of carry-over momentum coming off her Sectional Championship victory last week. Sivan's consitancy kept her averaging just over 39 points per dive, and a final score of 430.90. Sivan was the District Runner-up and goes into her first state meet seeded 6th overall but will look to improve on her personal high score of 445 and compete for the state title.

Also qualifying to her first state meet was Nordonia senior Bre Horrigan. Bre finished 6th at the district meet after a strong final round moved her up from the 7th spot at the end of the semi-finals. Bre happens to be the first Nordonia female athlete to qualify to a State Championship in 2 sports, after competing in the gymnastics state meets in 2007 & 2008. She carries the highest DD list into the state meet with the 17th overall seed.

Also diving in the D1 girls meet was Solon junior Taylor Epstein, Hudson Sophmore Taryn McLaughlin and Shaker Heights senior Hannah Fink. Taylor dove very well and set her new personal best score of 358 points and finished 13th. Hannah also dove well advanced to the finals at districts for the first time. Taryn, diving in her first district meet, made the final round and finished in 10th place with a score of 369, just 1 spot out of advancing to the state meet.

Both Taryn and Taylor will continue training with AFD throughout the USA Diving season, and Hannah will continue diving next season in college.

Sydney Liber of Chagrin Falls competed in Thursdays D2 girls district meet. Sydney finished her first year of high school diving after much improvement and will work with the AFD team during the USA Diving season as well.

Congratulations again to all AFD district qualifiers. Full results will soon be available online,
