The boys District Championship Meets took place Wednesday (D1) and Thursday (D2) nights following the girls meets. American Flyers Diving had seven divers in the D1 meet and 3 divers in the D2 meet. If it hadn't been made clear following the D1 girls meet, AFD finalized the their statement of supremacy over the northeast Ohio competition.
The audience at Cleveland State's Robert F. Busbey Natatorium was able to watch Solon's Mike Kreft repeat as the Northeast District Champion. Mike's performance was a near replica of his sectional victory, maintaining a a top three position throughout the preliminary round and then slowly but decisively separating himself from the field. Mike finished with a score of 498.85, less then 1 point shy of his sectional score of 499.20. Mike will be diving in his third consecutive state meet, coming of a runner-up performance last season. Mike will be favored to win the Ohio State title as he enters the meet with the highest qualifying score.
Another AFD standout performance was turned in by sophomore Steve Schillero of Garfield Heights. Steve finished 8th last year at the district meet with a score of 394.55. Steve's notable improvement since last season earned him a score 450.60 this year and placed him 4th overall. Steve finished this years district meet ahead of 4 divers who placed ahead of him at least years state meet where he finished 8th. He will be looking for a top 3 finish at states this year as he carries the 4th highest district score into the meet.
Two other Solon divers, and Daniel Jacobson Micah Rembrant, also advanced out of the district meet. Daniel and Micah finished 6th and 7th respectively with scores of 445.50 and 442.35. This is the second consecutive year that Solon will have three boys competing at the state meet. Both Micah and Daniel were state finalist in 2009, finishing 5th and 9th. Both will be diving in their final meet for Solon High School and will be greatly missed. Daniel will be continuing his diving career at Case Western Reserve University while Micah will finish his high school career in Massachusetts.
Also diving in the D1 meet was Eric Steiger of Hudson, Sean Whittaker of Nordonia and Doug Karn of Solon. Eric will continue to train with AFD as narrows down his choices of where he will dive in college. Sean will be back as a senior for Nordonia next season and will look to advance to his first state meet. Doug will also be working with AFD during the USA Diving season and will fill in nicely in the spots the Daniel and Micah are leaving.
The D2 American Flyers had a tough task infront of them on Thursday night. Alex Lohiser of Gilmour Academy and Hunter Flagg and Chris Riley of Aurora were all vying for three of the five available qualifying spots to the D2 State Meet. With only the top five advancing the three boys dove consistent and eased their way into the final round and all three qualified out.
Alex, in only his first year competing at the high school level finished 2nd overall with a score of 380.05. He will be seeded 2nd overall at his first state meet and will look to improve upon his personal best score while maintaining his level of consistency and competitiveness.
Chris and Hunter finished in 3rd and 4th place, scoring 321.65 and 320.60. Both will be competing in their first state meet as well. Hunter finished 7th at districts last year with a score of 261.45 and Chris was 10th at 245.80. Both divers have made obvious improvements and will be challenging for top five finishes at this years state meet.
Overall, AFD will have 7 boys diving at the Ohio State Championship Meet this season. Four divers are making repeat trips while three will be there for the first time. Complete district meet results are available online,
